Scars and Moles

Scar Revisions

Once a Scar always a Scar…!!

Scars are always present following a cut by surgery or due to any injury. Scars never vanish, but they do fade over a period of time.

Scar revision surgery is one of the most unrewarding procedures in many cases, as the aim is to only reduce the scar and not eliminate it.

Scar is the cementing material which the body lays down to bind the wound edges together.
The amount of scar varies from individual to individual due to various factors like persons age, heredity, race, skin characteristics and the type, direction, location and depth of the wound.

Scar revision is done to make an old and conspicuous scar look better or less noticeable.

This is done by removing the old scar, making a new thinner scar and one that is in line with the natural skin creases and hence not readily visible. This could be done by a variety of methods and procedures. The scar may be thick or deep or raised or dark or hard. Depending on its position and age, the decision is taken as to its revision and expected results or improvements.

But in most cases the results are acceptable and an improvement of anywhere between 60-80% can be achieved.
But in a few cases the results are less than satisfactory and that is a chance one has to take.

Moles / Birth Marks

Moles are collections of pigmented cells within layers of the skin.

These can occur anywhere in the body but, the ones on the face are a cause for concern for patients who then come for removal.

In the west, there is a medical indication for mole removal. Because of their skin type, with increased exposure to the sun as in beaches, there is a fear of the moles turning malignant. In India because of our pigmented skin, the incidence of transformation is less as compared to the west.

Depending on the size of the lesion it could be curetted out or excised or excised and grafted.
Removal always leaves a scar behind. Most of the times it is placed in such a way that it merges with the skin creases and are not readily visible. Though more prominent initially, the scars mature and become less visible with time.

After excision if in doubt, the lesions are sent for microscopic examination which will give us the true nature of the lesion.

BIRTH MARKS or Neavi, as they are called are collections of blood vessels usually and can be of different varieties.
Depending on the type, the area of involvement and the size they have to be treated.

The various options are simple excisions withe closure or removal with flap coverage in larger lesions or LASER for superficial lesions.
