Female Genital surgeries (rejuvenation) E-mail

A few of the commonly performed procedures for the female genitalia are discussed here.

Vaginoplasty:

This is a procedure done for cases with congenital absence of vagina.

Here the procedure is done in conjunction with the gynecologist who creates a new space . This neo vagina is then lined with a skin graft. The procedure is done preferably just before sexual initiation or before marriage.

The space is then maintained by the use of a spacer which is provided to the patient. Once sexual activity starts then that is enough to maintain the space.

Hymenoplasty :

This is a procedure also called “Revirginization” and involves recreating the membrane at the opening of the vagina called “ the Hymen”. This is done more for social indications rather than a medical or cosmetic indication.

The hymen can be broken because of many reasons like sports, horse riding, tampon insertion, masturbation and falls, apart from sexual intercourse. So the decision to undergo hymen repair is usually a personal choice.

The procedure is done  under local anaesthesia and sedation as an out patient procedure and the patient can go home the same day. They are advised to avoid any strenuous activity for the next week.

The procedure involves raising small flaps from the remenants of the hymen and suturing them to form the thin covering. In places where they are done on a more regular basis thin artifical membranes  with blood sealed in between are available which is sutured in place to be broken during the first act of intercourse. But usually only flaps of thin skin are created and sutured  to recreate the Hymen.

Vaginal Tightening and Rejuvenation:

Another procedure coming into vogue nowadays is Vaginal Rejuvenation and tightening.

There is nothing like a “Perfect Vagina”, like there is nothing like a “Perfect Nose or  a Perfect Smile”

But a few things that are seen as time goes by which gives the vagina and perineal area an older look can be quantified by comparing it to that of a younger female.

As with other areas in the body aging takes its toll leading to some changes as given below:

1.    In a  young woman the outer lips or labia major are the ones that are seen first  and are thick and plump and usually lying close to each other without an opening seen in between them where as in an older female the lips are thin, with loose skin and lie far apart and open.

2.    The inner lips  or labia minora are usually smaller and thinner and are inside the labia majora and do not extend out in between the outer lips. In older women the labia minora often become long and hang ouside the labia majora.  This is in fact the most common complaint with which women come to us seeking correction of this problem also called a “Labiaplasty”

3.    The Introitus is smaller and the skin between the actual vaginal opening and the inner lips is not that much and they lie close to each other. In older age groups this is larger and hence they lie wide apart.

4.    The vaginal tone is another thing which is looser and more accommodating in an older vagina as compared to one of a younger female because of use and child birth and regular aging process which relaxes the muscles. Some amount of improvement can be achieved by doing pelvic floor exercises called “ Kegel's Exercises".

So vaginal rejuvenation involves trying to correct all these issues and try and get the vagina to a state that it was. A variety of procedures are done to achieve this.

Labiaplasty to reduce the size of the labia, reducing the distance between the vagina and the inner lips, tightening the vaginal muscles and fat grafting of the outer lips and surrounding areas.

The procedures are done under anaesthesia and usually an overnight stay is required. Takes around 7-10 days to heal but for complete healing takes around 8-12 weeks. A well tolerated procedure with a surprisingly high satisfaction rating after the initial healing time.

Labioplasty or Labiaplasty:

This refers to the procedure by which the labia ( lips) minora most commonly or sometimes both the majora and minora are reduced surgically if they are too long.

Many women are bothered about it as they know how it was and they feel it is not the same as time progresses and they feel uncomfortable about it. In normal course the labia minora are smaller and hidden within the labia majora as in the younger age groups. So, this is an attempt to bring it back to the way it was.

It is a relatively simple procedure which can be done under local anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia and the patient can go home the same day.

Some times this maybe be accompanied by fat grafting of the labia majora to increase their volume & give them a more youthful look.

“G Spot” Amplification:

This is a relatively new addition to the procedures. The “G Spot” or The Gräfenberg spot, is a female erogenous zone, which when stimulated leads to high levels of sexual arousal and powerful orgasms.

Though anatomically the “G spot” has not be identified as a distinct physical entity some studies and anecdotal evidences from different women have shown a very sensitive and thickened area in the anterior wall of the vagina. Some studies done also showed this thickening when the women is sexually aroused. Women claimed the experience of a “deeper” orgasm when their her G-spot was stimulated.

Despite professional and scientific criticism and skepticism in general by the public, the G-spot, as a concept, has been widely accepted. Even in India judging by the mails, the awareness has definitely increased.

“G Spot” amplification is an extension of the same concept. As stimulation of the “G spot” is supposed to give greater arousal to the woman, the procedure involves identifying the spot and increasing the size by an injection. It is a relatively safe and simple procedure done as an office procedure. The injection lasts for 6-8 months and can give enhanced pleasure during intercourse by increasing the size of the “G spot” during that time.

But in some cases the results may not be up to the mark because of the difficulty of finding the “G spot”.

The injection can be repeated as and when the effect wears off and the woman feels she wants the extra help to get aroused.
