Vitiligo ( white patches) treatment |
|
This condition is a very stressful condition because of social stigma attached to it. Here, there is deficiency of the pigment producing cells - “The Melanocytes”, in that area of skin.
Usually treated medically. But, sometimes can be treated surgically by skin over grafting or tattooing on the limbs and if small areas on the face, they can be treated by excision.
Surgical treatment is usually done only when the spot is not growing in size, has been stationary for at least a year and no new spots are appearing. The procedure involves removal of the superficial layer of skin in the affected area and grafting it with a thin layer of skin harvested from another site. This donor area usually heals by itself.
The problem with this is that the area from where the skin is harvested (usually the thighs) is also scarred and may become hyperpigmented.
